Home Bar #3: 4 month retrospective
April 13th, 2008As a scientist, I like quantitative formulas. As a young Manhattanite, I like to drink. To wrap these statements altogether, to find out which brands have been enjoyed the most from my home bar, I suggest the following:
The awesomeness of any alcohol as defined by Dandan (ADandan), is directly proportional to volume of this alcohol gone/missing/drank from the bottle (Vg). However, the volume drank is inversely proportional to the expense (E) of the bottle, and whether or not this expense actually matters depends on the current coefficient of cheap-ass (C), which is function of how many days are left till the next paycheck.
However, in the interest of time, the awesomeness index of any alcohol can be approximated by counting which bottles have been emptied since I started my home bar in late December ;).
- Svedka vodka
Replaced with UV vodka. Ah, not one of my smarter moves. Svedka isn’t exactly great vodka, but it tastes infinitely better/smoother than UV vodka (which goes down with the consistency of an ashtray). I don’t particularly feel compelled to get better vodka though — I’m just not Eastern European enough to drink it anyway other than heavily mixed. - Bombay Sapphire gin
Ah dear. I’ve developed quite a fancy towards gin. I blame Bombay Sapphire. Gin cocktails are simply amazing - whether it’s a classic martini, gin & tonic, gin fizz, gimlet or gin rickey. It’s nice to have a liquor that is distinctive in a cocktail but isn’t overwhelming like a whiskey tends to be.
After this particular gin was finished, I replaced it with some Hendrick’s & Tanqueray Rangpur, but I’ve discovered that I don’t like those quite as much. Bombay Sapphire’s got a very strong juniper scent that I actually find it very tasty & refreshing. Hendricks is kind of weird, with its cucumber flavor, while Tanqueray Rangpur just doesn’t have a strong taste to me. Looks like I’ll probably go back to Bombay Sapphire at the end of the day. - Carolan’s Irish Cream
Replaced with the same. It’s half the price of Bailey’s and I find it tastier, being a bit less sweet. - Cachaca 51
Not yet replaced, but definitely will! On the South American theme of things, I think I’d like to try and pick up a pisco sometime too.
Mrm. 4 empty after 4 months. That seems pretty reasonable on both my liver and my wallet. However, with the geographical convening of the aq authors coming up soon, this could change…

So awesomeness is measured in units of ounces/US$? Or I guess cL/€ if you want to use the metric system with it.
As I think I’ve mentioned, I’m not really a vodka person, but it’s been so long since I’ve even tried gin that it would be interesting to see if I even like the stuff these days…

C (Cost) is actually kind of interesting; its in mL/$, so Awesomeness is a unitless measurement after you’re done.

But C(d) is the coefficient of cheap-ass. How do you justify cheap-ass being in mL/$ unless that’s the size of your ass over the… cost of your ass…

nono, cheap-ass is just in $ — the mL gets canceled out from the volume on top, and you end up with a unitless Awesomeness score.
and btw, now i need to make an equation that somehow incorporates the size of my ass

not so much the cost, of course — my ass is priceless
